What are infrared thermometers?

Infrared thermometers are also known as temperature guns or laser thermometers that measure surface temperature. Infrared thermometers available in the market are gun -style thermometers allowing the individual to easily “point and shoot” at the surface of the object/material one wants to measure.

It works by using a lens to focus light onto a detector called a thermopile. Thermopile then absorbs infrared radiation and turns it to heat and produces temperature reading.

Why do I need an infrared thermometer?

It takes surface temperature readings without making contact with the object being read preventing from one from dangers of burns or scalding. The gun style thermometer is extremely quick in measuring temperature. Following are the advantages in various fields as mentioned below:

Cooking

They can quickly measure the heat of certain foods and accurately read liquid temperatures. It can also be used to gauge the surface heat of pots and pans prior to contact.

Agriculture

An infrared thermometer can read the surface of the soil. In industry, infrared thermometers can help farmers, scientists track and improve upon agricultural activity.

Engineering

An infrared thermometer helps in finding ways to judge the irregularities in the operation of electrical appliances and mechanical systems. Taking the temperature of a system or appliance can confirm if it overheating or operating below a certain temperature level.

Medical

Infrared thermometers are used in hospitals and homes to take temperatures in a different manner. It is the best tool to get instant access to know the temperature.

How to use an infrared thermometer?

An infrared thermometer is simple to use. However it is recommended that one reads the manufacturer’s instructions to help you get the most accurate readings. The general steps using an infrared thermometer are as follows:

  • Turn on the power button.
  • Get as close to the target as possible, while remaining safe.
  • Point your infrared thermometer towards the target. Most thermometers produce laser to make aiming simple.
  • Pull the trigger to get a reading. The reading shall be shown clearly on the display.
